Introduction
The VML EVK is a high-performance, vision-AI accelerated evaluation and development kit built around the Renesas RZ/V2L processor. It combines the production-ready XENO+ VML SOM (System- on-Module) with a feature-rich carrier/EVK board, delivering a complete platform for evaluating and deploying cost-efficient energy-efficient edge AI applications.
The RZ/V2L processor at the heart of the platform integrates two 1.2 GHz Arm® Cortex®-A55 application cores, a 200 MHz Cortex-M33 real-time core, an Arm Mali-G31 3D GPU, an Image Scaling Unit (ISU), and an on-chip DRP-AI neural-network accelerator capable of 1 TOPS/W efficiency. The integrated H.264 hardware video encode/decode engine (1920×1080) and the DRP Simple ISP library make it ideal for embedded vision workloads.
The XENO+ VML SOM (model R2L100) is a compact 40×40 mm solderable module with 176 LGA solder pads, integrating 2 GB DDR4-1600, 8 GB eMMC (expandable to 32 GB), 16 MB QSPI NOR boot flash, and all necessary power management on a single module ready for production use.
The EVK carrier board exposes the full peripheral set of the SOM including dual Gigabit Ethernet, MIPI- DSI and MIPI-CSI camera interfaces (with dual FPC connector options), M.2 slots for Wi-Fi and LTE modules, a SIM card slot, USB 2.0 interfaces, CAN-FD, ADC inputs, I2C, SPI, UART expansion, audio codec with TRRS jack and onboard microphone, a 40-pin expansion header, and a 12 V DC jack power input.
Software enablement is based on a CIP Kernel Linux BSP (long-term supported 10+ years) with device tree overlays, plus Renesas DRP-AI reference designs for vision AI applications. Debug access is provided via a 10-pin SWD/JTAG header, a dedicated JTAG connector, and a USB debug UART
